Job Summary:


The Sonoma Research Winemaking Internship Program is searching for appropriate candidates to fill a 7-8 months position (approximately August through March). Interns are expected to assist in daily crush activities or manage a portion of an ongoing project, depending on their level of experience. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands on experience and increase your skill base for graduate school or future employment.   Working closely with Winemakers, interns will:
•       Assist Winemakers and associates in lab blends, tasting, grape grading, inventory control, cellar work, and sampling.
•       Participate in some aspects of winemaking from grapes through wine.

Minimum Qualifications
•       High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
•       Currently enrolled at a college or university and working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Fermentation Science, Plant Science, Enology, Food Science, Microbiology or Chemistry; or a Bachelor’s degree in Fermentation Science, Plant Science, Enology, Food Science, Microbiology or Chemistry.
•       Knowledge of winemaking equipment, processes and procedures
•       Required to lift and move up to 30 lbs.
•       Applicant must be able to climb fixed stairs with handrails and vertical ladders with hoop cages to a height of 50 feet.
•       Required to be 21 years of age or older.
•       The position requires availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
•       Junior or Senior class standing at a college or university and working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Fermentation Science, Plant Science, Enology, Food Science, Microbiology or Chemistry.
•       Prior harvest experience in production winemaking.
•       Experience with cellar work, such as racking, crush pad, barrel filling/topping/empting, press operations and winery cleaning/sanitation.
•       Prior winemaking and tasting experience desired
•       Skilled in computing mathematic formulas and basic computer skills.
•       Familiar with wine Chemistry and Microbiology.
•       Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  Good oral and written communication skills.
•       Excellent organizational skills with experience managing multiple assignments.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
•       Inside/Outside conditions: During Crush, work estimated at 80% (but not limited to) outside, with weather of varying types.
•       Required to lift and move up to 30 lbs.
•       Wet/dangerous conditions vary and may include work in rain or during irrigation of vineyards.
•       Applicant must be able to climb fixed stairs with handrails and vertical ladders with hoop cages to a height of 50 feet.
•       Noise levels may vary. May be in situations where ear protection should be used; though not for extended periods.
