2017 Viticulture & Enology
Mill Creek Vineyards & Winery is seeking a talented individual for the 2017 grape growing and winemaking season. This position is an internship and would necessitate taking the fall semester or quarter off if still in school. The person hired will gain valuable hands-on experience in most all aspects of vineyard and winery production. The start date is flexible to accommodate the various end of school dates but will run from approximately June 1st, 2017 to mid-November, 2017.
Mill Creek Vineyards and Winery is a small, estate winery, still owned and operated by the founding Kreck family. Vineyards were first planted in 1965 and the winery was established in 1974. The award-winning wines are produced from grapes grown on the winery estate, the family home in Alexander Valley, and a few select neighboring vineyards. The position would entail everything from canopy management and irrigation in the vineyard to crushing grapes and filling barrels in the winery. Please see below for a more detailed description.
Position Duties (partial list):
Fix and maintain irrigation system to ensure high efficiency
Perform grape water stress measurements
Grapevine irrigation after collaboration with the Vineyard Manager
Scout for vineyard diseases and pests
Perform canopy management duties as needed
Grape and wine sampling
Grape destemming and crushing
Pump overs & punch downs
Running errands, picking up supplies
Currently enrolled or recent graduate in an applicable field to wine or viticulture
The ability to read, understand, and write in English
A strong work ethic and the ability to work independently
The ability to lift and carry 50lbs on a regular basis
A clean driving record with a reliable vehicle
The ability to work long hours on his/her feet
The desire and ability to work extended hours and days during harvest
Desired but not mandatory:
Spanish speaking skills
We are accepting applications until January 6th, 2017 and then we will be evaluating applicants shortly thereafter. Please do not expect to hear from us until at least January 11th, 2017.
We welcome international applications although it is the candidate's responsibility to investigate and make sure he/she is eligible for hire before accepting a position. The applicant will need either an F-1 or J-1 visa and complete all necessary documents.
For the most part this is a 40 hour/week, 8hr/day position. During harvest, extended hours may be required.
