For the last 20 years, Carhartt Vineyard and Winery has been farming and making wine, all within their estate, Rancho Santa Ynez, in Santa Ynez, CA. Family owned and operated, mother and son winemaking team, Brooke and Chase Carhartt, alongside Brooke's husband Mike, grow 8 different varieties and produce over 20 different wines, from Rhone varieties to Bordeaux and beyond. All the wines are sold direct to consumer through their tasting room in downtown Los Olivos, online, and to their wine club. A true ground to glass operation.
First week in Novemeber
Our intern will work closely with the entire family and production team. We aim to teach as much as possible about the grape-growing and winemaking process. Due to the small scale operation, the work can get tough, but is ideal to get the full scope of a family-run operation. The ideal candidate for this position is able to handle physically demanding work yet mentally stay focused for long hours at a time. Availability will need to be from 5-6 days a week, 8-10 hours per day. We will try and keep these shifts to 8 hours, but they can occasionally go over.
Tasks will include but not limited to:
-Help the team harvest estate fruit
-Sample collection and record keeping
-General harvest operations
-General cellar and lab work
-Sterilization and sanitation processes
-Fermentation monitoring and evaluation
-Ability to climb, bend, and lift (up to 60 lbs) required.
-Previous harvest a plus but not required.
-Spanish speaking is also plus but not required
-Excitement and passion for winemaking a must!
-Attention to detail is crucial
-Positive attitude, openness to learning and hardworking are essential. During harvest, days are long and our team is small. It is necessary that any intern be willing to do whatever work is necessary to ‘get the job done’.
**Housing is NOT included; however, we will do our best to assist in finding proper housing for our interns.
