Our estate vineyards are located in the Ballard Canyon AVA within Santa Barbara County and on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles. Position Summary:

The Enologist will coordinate and perform analysis on wine, grapes, and must, oversee wine quality assurance and quality control from grape receipt through packaging, and maintain up-to-date and accurate records.

Essential Duties:

Oversee quality control throughout all stages of wine production.

Conduct chemical analysis on juice, musts and wine including but not limited to routine quality control analysis, juice/wine trials, and pre/post addition analysis.

Coordinate and perform sampling of barrels and tanks.

Perform calibrations, instrument maintenance, repairs and maintain lab supplies.

Conduct bottling quality control analysis including but not limited to dissolved oxygen, dissolved carbon dioxide, free/total sulfur, fill heights...etc.

Coordinate and perform trials, lend expertise and investigate new products for appropriate fining agents and additives as needed.

Maintain analytical records for all bulk and packaged wines in Vintrace inclusive of post-packaging quality assurance in conjunction with winemakers.

In conjunction with the winemakers, coordinate, schedule, and implement production activities in order to produce quality products on time and in full.

Perform production activities when assigned including chemical additions, cleaning, wine movements, crush activities, filtration...etc.

Participate in research and development projects pertaining to new product development, quality advancement, viticulture, and process efficiency.

Assist in various sales, marketing, and promotional events as needed.

Participate in weekend and evening winery events that require interaction with customers.

Remain current in the industry by attending educational opportunities, conferences, and workshops, reading publications, and maintaining personal and professional networks.

Adhere to all federal, state, and local guidelines.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Degree in Enology, Chemistry, Viticulture, Microbiology or related field, or equivalent experience.

“hands-on” wine production experience desired.

Experience with both the practical and technical aspects of the winemaking process and winemaking regulatory requirements.

Understanding of all aspects of harvest, fermentation, cellar work, and winemaking analysis is preferred.

Possess excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills, fluent in English, both verbal and written; spoken Spanish helpful.

Experience in a premium winemaking environment, and a commitment to growing quality.

Possess strong organizational, teambuilding, and problem-solving skills along with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Availability to work a varied schedule during the harvest season as needed.

Possess excellent math and recordkeeping skills along with a working knowledge of data collection and analysis.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to learn other related computer programs & databases.

Valid driver’s license and insurability.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Working environment has exposure to both indoors and outdoors and related warehouse/production equipment and associated noise levels.

Perform tasks requiring climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, stooping, standing, and twisting in the performance of various tasks in the warehouse/production environment.

Able to work at various heights, on ladders and catwalks.

Perform physically strenuous tasks including lifting heavy objects (50+ lbs).

Typical winery chemical exposure and conditions.

Able to drive a forklift.

Able to fly comfortably in small aircraft when requested.
