Gainey, who originally acquired 1,800 acres of land for cattle and agriculture, the vineyard began with a conversion of 50 acres to grapevines in 1984. Today, it's a fourth-generation family enterprise, known for a blend of tradition and innovation in winemaking, managed under the expertise of winemaker Jeff LeBard and a dedicated team of passionate wine industry veterans.

Job Description:
The Gainey Vineyard, located in the Santa Ynez Valley, is looking for a laboratory intern to join our winemaking team for the 2024 harvest season. As an intern, you'll be an integral part of the winemaking team. The Gainey Vineyard is an ultra-premium, boutique operation. You will have the opportunity to learn firsthand how we craft our wines during the most vital stage of the entire process. You will also have the unique opportunity to work with everything from cool climate Pinot Noir’s and Chardonnay’s to our warmer climate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals. You will work directly under the supervision of our Enologist.
Job responsibilities include but are limited to:
• Samples juices, fermenting musts and wines for analysis and tasting.
• Performs all routine wet chemical/physical analyses on grapes, fermenting musts and wines during harvest
• Types of analysis includes free SO2, TA, pH, VA, Brix, Alcohol, Malic, YAN
• Performs daily monitoring of fermentations, and daily brix checks
• Performs tasks related to harvest chemical additions and inoculations
• Performs chemical additions in the cellar including fermentation nutrients as well as inoculums for primary and secondary fermentations
• Maintains clear, concise and accessible records of all data for juices and wines during harvest
• Inputs wine/juice analysis into Database program.
• Recognizes and resolves any discrepancies in data.
• Orders laboratory supplies when necessary.
• Maintains lab in a clean and orderly state.
• Must respect all winery safety regulations pertaining to the use and proper disposal of chemicals.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Skills / Qualifications / Experience:
Required Qualifications:
• 21 years of age
• Strong chemistry skills required to run analysis.
• Understands standards as it relates to the beverage industry and the ability to communicate deviations
Preferred Skills:
• Strong written and verbal communication skills desired.
• Must be highly organized and able to multi-task multiple projects.
• Ability to work as a team with all winery employees.
• Ability to work flexible shifts and long hours.
• Working knowledge of MS Office and Teams
Physical Demands and Work Conditions:
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• May require standing up to 3 hours.
• Work is repetitious in nature with a high demand for speed, accuracy and precision.
• Ability to work irregular shifts and long hours during grape harvest.
